In the past, legal professionals expressed concern about private discussions on cell phones being intercepted. Attorney client privilege can be waived if the communication is not made in confidence. But what about when your iPhone is always listening?
Privacy used to be as easy as communicating behind closed doors, or using privacy filter screen guard ensures that your typed content remains hidden from prying eyes. Regrettably, this safeguard is no longer as foolproof as it once seemed. Researchers have successfully trained an AI to utilize an iPhone microphone for identifying and interpreting user keystrokes.
The findings from this study are striking. By training the AI on keystrokes captured from a nearby phone, the model attains an impressive 95% accuracy rate. Moreover, the model demonstrates 93% accuracy when trained on keystrokes recorded during Zoom video conferences. The researchers underline that these results underscore the feasibility of side-channel attacks using readily available equipment and algorithms.
The AI can be trained on any keyboard in the world. Once the software knows what make and model of computer you have. It can determine what keys are pressed and in what order.
Whether it involves confidential messages or passwords, any text entered by the user can potentially be intercepted. This serves as another compelling reason to mute Zoom when not actively speaking.
