The Federal Trade Commission's chair, Lina Khan, has written an opinion piece for the New York Times, expressing the agency's commitment to using existing laws to control some of the threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI), such as increasing the power of dominant firms and facilitating fraud. She said that the agency was "well-equipped" to handle this new area of regulation, although she did warn of the dangers of generative AI.
Tech like generative AI is capable of writing in conversational English and could be used to help scammers write more convincing phishing emails. Khan also highlighted the risk of firms that dominate cloud services and computing becoming even more powerful as they help start-ups and other businesses launch their own AI, while adding that AI tools could also be used to facilitate collusion to raise prices.
