In a classic David versus Goliath battle, a British software firm, Threads Software Limited, has issued a 30-day ultimatum to Meta, demanding that it cease using the name "Threads" for its latest social media platform in the UK. Threads Software Limited owns the trademark for the name and has warned Meta that it will seek a court injunction if the 30-day deadline is not respected.
Threads, developed and trademarked in 2012 by JPY Ltd, is a cloud-based intelligent message hub that consolidates digital messages, emails, and phone calls into a searchable database. Threads Software Limited actively promoted the Threads service worldwide since 2014 and has seen sales grow at 200% annually, with nearly 1,000 organizations licensed to use it.
Meta had been aware of Threads before launching its own platform under the same name and made several unsuccessful offers to purchase the domain "threads.app" from Threads Software Limited. Despite the legal battle ahead, Threads Software Limited stands firm in protecting its recognized brand, emphasizing that even a tech giant like Meta does not have the right to use the Threads brand name.
Similar to other cases where companies share the same name, such as X, Meta's Threads now faces a legal challenge. Despite its initial success, Threads' user engagement plummeted, prompting Meta to introduce new features and Instagram integration. Additionally, Meta has encountered copyright infringement claims since rebranding from Facebook in 2021.
