UK call for global alliance to tackle AI misuse like deepfakes and fraud.

A group of influential British MPs has called for the formation of a global alliance to address the potential misuse of artificial intelligence (AI). They have recommended that the UK government collaborate with democratic nations that share similar values. This cooperative effort aims to collectively protect against individuals or entities, whether state-affiliated or not, who intend to exploit AI for their own purposes.

The Science, Innovation and Technology Committee (SITC), which advises the government, made these recommendations in a report released on August 31. They emphasized the UK's ambition to play a significant role in advancing AI technology. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak plans to host a summit in early November, gathering global leaders and tech experts at Bletchley Park, a historic World War Two code-breaking center. The objective is to establish AI guidelines, positioning the UK as a central hub for the AI industry while also playing a regulatory role.

In a separate development, the House of Commons Culture, Media, and Sport Committee has urged the government to reconsider proposals that would grant AI developers unrestricted access to train their systems using existing music, literature, and art. In an August 30 report, the committee cautioned that the government's initial plan to exempt AI-driven text and data mining from copyright protections could devalue the arts and culture, reducing them to mere resources for AI advancement.

There have also been discussions within the government about whether to include China in the November summit. This gathering is expected to bring together leaders from the Group of Seven nations and industry executives, according to Bloomberg sources.

The SITC report recommends that the government draft an AI bill for discussion during an upcoming parliamentary session on November 7. Failing to do so could result in the UK lagging behind other legislative efforts, notably the ongoing discussions regarding the EU's AI Act.
