Will AI Kill Paralegals?

The use of large language models-based AI systems such as GPT-3 and GPT-4 is set to revolutionize the practice of law. This technology has the potential to offer legal services at lower cost, with higher efficiency and with higher odds of favorable outcomes in litigation. AI can vastly accelerate time-consuming tasks in litigation such as extracting structure, meaning, and salient information from an enormous set of documents produced during discovery. It can also quickly produce initial drafts, citing relevant case law, advancing arguments and anticipating arguments from opposing counsel.

The process of drafting documents requiring high degrees of customization such as contracts or court filings will be much more efficient with AI. AI could also be used during a trial to analyze a transcript in real-time and provide input to attorneys. The use of AI will require attorneys to develop new skills such as knowing how to choose the right AI tool for a particular task, construct the right queries, evaluate the responses' relevance, quality and accuracy, synthesize results, and protect confidentiality.

Law firms and law schools will need to provide new training so that attorneys can adapt to this new environment. Legal and policy frameworks will need to be updated to facilitate innovation in the use of AI in the legal sector while identifying and protecting against associated risks.
